Scaling and Root planning

Dental scaling is a procedure performed when patients have gum diseases or teeth have excessive plaque.  Standard cleaning procedures take care of only the tooth surface but scaling is a type of dental cleaning that focusses on the much deeper side (below the gumline). Generally scaling is performed along with root planing. Scaling and root planing is known as deep cleaning methods.

When dental scaling is required?

• Plaque is usually buildup on teeth surface. The teeth are always covered by bacteria, saliva, etc at all the times. Even when we have our meals tiny food particles, sugars from food, acid stick to the teeth cover and it is called plaque. The bacteria that live on plaque cause gum diseases or tooth decaying. Periodic dental cleanings will help to remove plaque and avoid more serious problems in future.
• The tissues fit around the tooth tightly and avoid plaque only if we have healthy gums. But due to gum diseases, tissues tend to loose. Gums attach to the tooth below 1 to 3mm of gumline but will gum diseases we have gumline below 3 mm called pockets. These deep pockets can worsen plaque and may also have bad breadth.
