Gingivectomy

Gingivectomy
  • A patient may require to undergo surgery for severe gum diseases if it cannot be cured with antibiotics or root planing and scaling. A gingivectomy is a procedure which helps in removing and reshaping loose, diseased gum tissue for getting rid of pockets between the teeth and gums.
  • The procedure starts by numbing your gums with a local anesthesia. Then the dental surgeon may use a laser to remove loose gum tissue.
  • After removing the gum tissue, the dental surgeon may put a temporary coverage over your gum line. This is done to protect your gums during the healing process. You can eat soft foods and drink cool or slightly warm liquids while the coverage is in place and your gums are healing.
  • You can resume your routine activities after the procedure completes. The recovery takes around few days to weeks. The gums original shape may change after the surgery. A gingivectomy is required when the gums move away from the teeth, creating deep pockets. The pockets make it difficult for cleaningplaque. Gingivectomy is done before gum diseases damage the supporting bones of the teeth.
