How does Teeth Whitening Work?

Tooth "whitening" is a process that makes the teeth appear to be whiter than they actually are. Teeth Whitening is commonly done in two ways: bleaching and non-bleaching.Though the terms "bleaching" and "whitening" are interchangeably used, it is recommended that "bleaching" can only be used when a product has bleach. A product is considered simply "whitening" when it removes food or debris from the teeth without bleaching.

Professionally, teeth whitening takes about an hour at a dentist's office. The dentist applies a teeth whitening gel with 25%-40% Hydrogen peroxide and then applies the gel uses a special heating lamp targeting the teeth for three 20 minute intervals and reapplies the gel between the intervals. Dentists also use a laser to speed up or activate the whitening process. A protective barrier is used to keep lips, gums and tongue afar from the whitening gel so that it can stay in place. For best results, the dentist usually gives whitening trays specifically crafted for your teeth so you can follow-up at home with bleaching solutions.
