Post and Core Build Up

Post and Core Build Up
  • Post and core build-up restorations are also known as foundation restoration which is generally done after a RCT and before crowning.
  • In post restoration, initially RCT is performed on the tooth to remove the damage or infection and shape the root canal. A small instrument known as a dental file is used to shape the top of the root canal, select a post and then bond it in place. After the post is bonded well, the tooth is filled with a new core material. Once it has hardened, the core material is shaped and prepared for crowning. An impression of teeth is then taken for dental laboratory to custom-crafting a crown that will precisely fit the tooth.
  •  A tooth undergoing a RCT has a large filling and most of the original tooth is gone. During a root canal, a hole is created in the natural crown using drilling. The hole penetrates through the crown center to the roots and the root canal is performed through this hole. The area being drilled out is called the core of the crown. All teeth need crowning after a root canal. For the crowning procedure to be successful, it must have a strong foundation. This support is provided by the core build-up. Core build-up replaces the original shape of the tooth so that it will be easier to design a crown.
