Multi-Rooted Root Canal Therapy
- RCT is the process of removing the tooth’s pulp which is a small thread-like tissue in the center of the mouth. After removal of the dead or damaged pulp, the remaining gap is first cleaned and shaped and then filled which seals the root canal.
- Earlier, in dentistry RCT was not available and in those days the damaged teeth were completely removed. In these days, RCT saves many teeth that can be lost otherwise.
- Mostly the tooth’s pulp is damaged due to cracked or broken tooth, a deep cavity, tooth injury or severe hit to tooth in case of an accident recently or in past.
- If the infected or damaged pulp is left untreated, pus may develop at the root tip in jawbone resulting in formation of an abscess which can destroy the surrounding tooth bone and cause pain.
- After restoration of the tooth, it can last lifelong if proper care is taken. Good oral hygiene and periodic dental visits are recommended to avoid problems in future.
- The tooth pulp helps in keeping the tooth alive, otherwise root-treated teeth can become brittle and are more viable to fracture. Therefore, crowning or tooth filling after a RCT takes this significant consideration.

Laser Assisted RCT
We at Westcoast dental clinic also are expert in performing Laser Assisted Root canal therapy.
- Nowadays lasers can also be used in root canal procedures.
- LASER therapy uses rays of light to remove or modify soft and hard tissues of the mouth. The FDA has approved the use of lasers for root canal. Lasers emit intensely focused light rays which interact with the biological tissues in mouth.
- Lasers are widely used for opening surface of a tooth for root canal, removing dead tissues, cleaning, disinfecting, shaping and filling the canal.
- As per the paper of AAE, lasers give more fruitful results when used in root canal preparation rather than root canal disinfection.
- Lasers are also used in removing the dental pulp, shaping and cleaning of the dentinal walls of the root canals, etc. After preparation is complete and the root canal is sealed (usually with gutta-percha), the laser may also be used to soften and mold the sealant for the root canal system.
