Digital Dental Radiography

- 1. Direct method: which uses an electronic sensor to record images. The sensor is placed in the patient’s mouth.

- 3. Semi-indirect method: which is a combination of both a sensor and a scanner together to convert dental x-rays into a digital dental image.
- Digital dental radiographs are performed from inside or outside the mouth. Mostly inside the mouth X-rays are preferred as it provides much detail about the cavities, defects, status of developing teeth and to also control teeth and gum health. Outside the mouth, X-rays do not give a detailed view and hence are not used to identify individual tooth problems but they can help in detecting impacted teeth, control the jaw growth and development, and also identify some significant teeth problems, jaws or other bones on the face.
- Digital radiographs can identify decaying areas between teeth or beneath existing fillings, infections in bones, gum diseases, cysts, and also developmental abnormalities or tumors that normally cannot be identified by a visual dental examination of the patient.
- Digital radiographs can be displayed on any computer or laptop screen and can also be manipulated to enhance contrast and details, and transmitted electronically to other specialists without loss of quality. An early digital radiography may detect and treat crucial dental problems on time and may save money and discomfort.
