Bone Grafting Procedures
- Bone grafting is a surgical procedure in which transplanted bone is used for repairing and rebuilding diseased or damaged bones. Bone grafting can be done to repair any bones in the body. A dental surgeon may take a bone from any other part like from hips, ribs or legs called autografting or may take it from a donated body (cadaver) called allografting to perform the grafting. In allografting, no additional incision is required for getting the bone.Grafting is also useful for growing bone surrounding total knee replacement where there is bone loss or a fracture. It may fill an area which is boneless or help to provide shape and structure .
- Like other surgical procedures, Bone grafting also has some consequences resulting into bleeding, injection, pain, swellng, etc.
- The dental surgeon will decide which type of bone graft will be used prior to surgery. The patient will be given general anesthesia, which will put him/her into a deep sleep. The dental surgeon will then make an incision in the skin above where the graft is required and then shape the bone from other body part or from donated body to fit the area.
- After the grafting is over, recovery may take time around two weeks to an year depending on the size of the graft and other factors. The patient needs to avoid strenous physical activities till the surgeon tells to.
